Shopping

Tuscany and Chianti have a long and illustrious tradition of high quality, traditional handicrafts and artwork, which also make excellent souvenirs.

Apart from the vast range of food products (see also ”Wine and Food”), the world of fashion is a very important part of the economy, as demonstrated by the numerous international fairs and fashion events.

The refined workmanship of Florentine leather and wool products has its origins in medieval times, and for a period of time Florence actually had a sort of democratic government of the guilds (”le arti”).

To this day Italian shoes, as well as bags, belts, leather jackets, fine cashmere, linen and silk clothes items are famous all over the world and have become synonymous with class and style.

Florence is within easy reach for a day of shopping, either by train from Montevarchi (free parking on west side of the station), or by car (paid parking e.g. at Porta Romana or underneath the central railway station Santa Maria Novella). Here you will find all the well-known luxury brands (Gucci, Prada, Valentino, Ferragamo etc.) in addition to the fashion house of the ancient Florentine noble family of the Pucci (in Via Pucci of course), where historical Pucci dresses are on display.

A closer and perhaps easier option is the various fashion outlets near and around Montevarchi.

Going bargain hunting in nearby shops or on the local markets is also a fun and rewarding alternative, as you will often find excellent special offers of e.g. big brand names.

Many shops will ship overseas, which means that you can even consider buying heavy objects such as terracotta, antiques or wrought iron goods.
